It's sort of quaint to think now, but when I wrote "The Song Remains the Same" back in 2010, Miley Cyrus was still an innocent teen pop star. I created Brittany Wyoming as a spoof of the typical career trajectory of teen idols, who started out singing non-offensive bubblegum pop until their target audience reaches puberty, at which point they decide to extend their career by reinventing themselves in a new sleazy oversexualized image.
Brittany Wyoming's name was of course a spoof of Britney Spears and Cyrus' alter ego Hannah Montana. I suspected that Cyrus would try to do something to make herself look "mature" once her Montana days were over, but even the twerking caught me off guard. Everything I wrote seems to be coming true, and that's sort of sad, but to be expected.
I'm not sure if Cyrus can bounce back from this career swing, but I doubt it. She'll either become a Brittany Spears with increasingly diminishing returns, or she'll have to get a singing-show gig like Christina Aguilara in order to stay relevant. But for now, hurry up with that stripper pole Miley, Brittany needs in next...
