Meet Alexander, Gygax's resident neurotic fast-talking salesman. As a pegasus, Alex's primary means of making a living is offering taxi and sight-seeing rides around the valley. Since not very many people venture into this part of the planet, we can assume he's desperate to close a sale. Poor guy probably hasn't had any gigs in a while. Alexander's personality is based Jack Lemmon's Shelley Levine character in Glengarry Glen Ross, a devastating look at high-pressure salesmen and how their business effects them. Levine was of course the basis for the pathetic salesman character Gil Gunderson on "The Simpsons," which you might better recognize. Alex, like Shelley, is a sad sack who feels the world is against him. His conman-like demeanor is simply his way of compensating for low self-esteem. Unlike Shelley, he doesn't use deception to close a deal, it's just his services are sort of unnecessary amongst characters that can fly or teleport on their own. Why is there a pegasus in this comic? I wanted one, pretty much. I thought it would be a cute addition. Two final notes about his design. Alex's fur, mane and eye colors are a shout-out to the nutty pegasus pony Derpy Hooves from "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic." This has probably been commented many times in his presence, hence his irritation at Reece. Also, the blue aviator cap is a nod to Rocky the Flying Squirrel from "Rocky and Bullwinkle." I'm just a font of weird pop culture references.
