Just watched Avatar for the first time yesterday. Meh, it was okay. Of course the special effects were fascinating, no question about that. But the story was wholly predictable. I could tell exactly what was going to happen from the very beginning of the film, nothing surprised me in that aspect.
How this got to be the highest grossing movie of all time, I'll never know...

Watched The Road last weekend. The word "bleak" certainly comes to mind. That and "grim." It's a pretty unrelenting look at a post-apocalyptic future. Unlike movies like The Road Warrior or Waterworld which display the world "after the end" reverting to a sort of revival feudal/Wild West society with warlords and bandits and high speed adrenalin chases, this movie takes a more depressing route and shows it as a world where people scrape by to survive, with cannibals, thieves and murderers just barely eeking an existence out of the remains of the old world.
It was a good movie, just not a fun one. I prefer the movie A Boy and His Dog, which has a similar setting but plays the whole scenario for satirical black comedy.

With Final Destination 5 (which I might go to as my one yearly theater trip, especially since I have a gift card just wasting away) coming out soon, I feel this is a good time for a thread resurrection. An unholy resurrection, if you will. Anyway, in the last month or so, I've gotten around to seeing: I suppose that last one about sums up my general taste in movies.

Steve Guttenberg in a slasher movie? You have my interest piqued, sir!

I recently watched Russian Ark. The entire movie is just one continuous shot and is the longest shot in film history at 96 minutes. It's a tribute to Russian history and the Hermitage Museum. This movie is a masterpiece, a work of art; even if you're not interested in the subject matter, it's a must-see.

Sorry, but Maniac Cop would wipe the floor with Psycho Cop.

Hey now, be fair. Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky was an important examination of the Stanford Prison Experiment and why it's dangerous to run a prison with brute force and humiliating...
...nah, never mind, it's about a guy punching through people in the goriest way possible. I loved it, it was like the closest we'd ever get to a live-action Fist of the North Star film.
